The Barber of Birmingham
Civil Rights Short Documentary nominated for Academy Award
"The Barber of Birmingham", a short documentary on former civil rights activist James Armstrong, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the category "Best Documentary Short." Mr. Armstrong, who fought for the right to vote while carrying the American flag in the 1965 Bloody Sunday march from Selma to Montgomery, was the first to integrate his children in the all-white Graymont Elementary School. Made by Gail Dolgin and Robin Fryday on the eve of Barack Obamas election as the first African-American President, the film connects the unfolding of this historic event to the lives of "file and rank" activists such as Mr. Armstrong, who has owned and run Armstrong’s Barbershop, a cultural and political hub in Birmingham, Alabama, since 1955.
More information about the film itself as well as screenings can be found on the website.
